According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, approximately 80% of the cut flowers used in florists’ bouquets are imported. There’s been a recent — if small — rebound in the number of flower growers in the U.S. Camas Designs is committed to the growth of local flower farms. The following are farmers and advocates we team with to support what we at Camas often refer to as “locally sourced happiness.”
New Day Garden grows and sells Dahlia tubers and cut flowers. Although there are many sizes and colors of dahlias, New Day specializes in great cut flower varieties for bouquets. New Day is located on San Juan Island and is a primary source of flowers for our designs.
Floret Flowers. The resurgence of the U.S. flower farming movement can largely be attributed to Erin Benzakein, owner of Floret Flower, located in the Skagit Valley of Washington state. Most recently, Benzakein has created the Farmer-Florist Collective. This very special collective is committed to growing, using and promoting local and seasonal flowers in our communities. Erin Shackelford has followed the work of Floret for years and the Floret Seasonal Floral Intensive was an inspiring factor in the birth of Camas Designs.
Slow Flowers. Debra Prinzing, author of The 50 mile Bouquet and Slow Flowers, has created an online directory of flower farmers and florists who are committed to using primarily U.S. grown flowers in their arrangements. Debra is passionate about supporting the U.S. flower farming business and is a constant advocate of the Slow Flower movement through her books and speaking engagements. She selflessly gives of her time and knowledge and is often referred to as the Mother of the Slow Flower movement. Camas Designs is a proud member of the Slow Flower directory.
Seattle Wholesale Growers Market. The SWGM is a farmer-owned cooperative established in 2011 and committed to providing the very best the Pacific Northwest has to offer in cut flowers, greens and ornamentals from flower farms across Washington, Oregon and Alaska. We at Camas love the products available from the SWGM as well as the community of farmers and florists the market has created.
Pelindaba Lavender. Pelindaba is a premier grower of lavender plants, distiller of lavender essential oils and handcrafter of lavender products. Camas Designs sources seasonal lavender fresh from Pelindaba Farm.
San Juan Shindigs. Event rentals including tableware, linens, decor, and entertainment in the San Juan Islands. Camas Designs partners with San Juan Shindigs to provide a seamless and complete decor experience.
